How to Prepare Yr Home for a Small Project Visit (And Get the Most Out of It)

Hiring a skilled tradesperson for a small project is a bit different from a big contractor job — and a little preparation on your end can make a real difference in how smoothly things go. Here's what we've found actually helps at Yrs Truly Building.

Know what you want (roughly)

You don't need architectural drawings, but having a clear sense of the outcome you're after makes the estimate conversation much more productive. 'I want this bathroom to feel cleaner and more modern' is a great starting point. Photos help a lot too — if you've seen a tile pattern or fixture you like, save it. We can work from inspiration images.

Clear the work area

This is the single most helpful thing you can do. If we're doing bathroom tile work, clear the vanity and give us room to move. If it's drywall, move the furniture away from the wall. We'll protect floors and surfaces, but the more clearance there is, the faster we can work.

Make a list of everything

If you've been accumulating small fixes — a sticky door, a loose outlet cover, a gutter spike that needs resetting — write them all down before the visit. It's often possible to knock out several small items in the same trip, and having the list ready means we can give you a realistic picture of what fits in the day.

Ask questions

Plan for some dust

Tile work, drywall, and carpentry all produce dust. We contain it as well as possible, but that's not the same as zero. Covering nearby furniture or moving things out of the room is always appreciated and keeps the cleanup simple.
